About the Band;
As a live band, The Fonsecas have been described repeatedly as 'utterly joyful'. Being able to induce a whole range of positive emotions from trad folk and world groove dancers to beautiful ballads and harmony vocal sunshine tunes. Working the festival/party crowd to more intimate venues; a good time live band!
The Fonsecas formed in 2016, out of a local folk club session in the coastal part of Aberdeenshire (near Cruden Bay) and brought together a set of songs to play at Belladrum Festival, in the highlands, in 2016. We went on to record that suite of songs, which were inspired by the themes of traditional Aberdeenshire ballads and fisher tunes, but by our own hand.
Andy is from Nairn and Daryl has a caravan up north, with Jasmine and Kenny being based in North Aberdeenshire, so we tend to play over the north a lot, but are very much up for festival and venues further afield. So get in touch!
The album was 'Where the river meets the sea' and was released on 27th April 2018 by Village Sunsets Records, is an album of 15 original compositions which has been drafted in 2 halves - Part 1 being a suite of uplifting songs, Part 2 consisting of romantic ballads and coastal folklorism.
Having received a great reception to our debut album and gigs, we have spent much of the next 2 years in a rural bothy, creating new music and songs; still on the same themes but mixing trad scots and irish folk and world sounds in with our 'sunshine' songs and ballads.
We finally found the time after lockdown, in early 2022, to record the album 'live at the Bothy'. It captures the band in our natural environment and sounds amazing, just need to finish production! Out in 2023 (we promise!) xx.
The Fonsecas have been delighted to play a range of venues and festivals, which we thank;
-
Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival - From the main folk stage, to the world/funky/jazz stages!
-
Portsoy Traditional boat festival - On both stages, in this amazing coastal/harbour fest.
-
Folk Clubs - Notably hosting a night at the Cruden Bay Folk Club for our first album launch.
-
Bars/Venues - Special note to the Bandstand Bar in Nairn, very professional set up and crackin laugh!
-
Village halls - Our local halls have been full of dancers, bringing roots music to the roots!
We've been blessed to have various musicians play with us or on our albums, notably;
-
Steve Wickham - Fiddle mannie, notably playing with the Waterboys
-
Pete Hawkey - A NE scotland multi-instrumental folk stalwart, who played various things (?) on our first album (a lot of flute)
-
Michael Rochon - Our mate, who helped bring band together and played on our first album.
-
Chris Triance (Jazz's dad) who blew his horn on our first album.
-
Kenny Shand - Mr Trombone, who also played on our first album and sits in live.
Thanks to Marc Marnie, Cat Reid and Angelika McKenzie for the photos.
